Don’t Skip Over the Small Moments
Everything matters, even the things you think don’t make a difference, make a difference. Trust me.
Getting Ready
You pick up the leash, put on your shoes and grab your keys…does your dog get excited because they know you’re going out for a walk? If you don’t address that excitable energy you will allow it to carry through to your walk. This is a great time to utilize your place exercise. Picking up a leash shouldn’t mean anything to your dog other than you are just picking up the leash.
It’s What You Say and How You Say It
Be calm and neutral when getting your dog ready for a walk, do NOT amp them up (“You wanna go for a walk?! Wanna go outside!?). Notice how their state of mind shifts when you speak calmly instead of excitedly. You will have a much easier time getting your dog to concentrate and focus.
Heading Out
Does your dog blow through the door the second you open it? Take an extra minute or two to work on some patience and respect at thresholds. Just because a door is open doesn’t mean they get to plow through it.
Less Is More
I know we all love to talk to our dogs (myself included) but in these moments, keep the talking to a minimum. A lengthy conversation doesn’t do anything for your dog except amp them up. Be clear with your commands and expectations.
